Substance use disorders take a huge toll on the body and the mind of an individual. However, detox is meant to help an individual recover and improve their social, physical, and mental well-being. Supplementing traditional treatment methods with a holistic approach can be very beneficial and healing for an individual on their addiction recovery journey.

What exactly is a holistic approach?

A holistic approach means the individual in recovery is treated with many factors of the individual in mind rather than one distinct behavior or symptom. This approach can include targeting the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of an individual. By targeting multiple factors and treating the individual as a whole rather than just the symptoms of addiction, a person can see greater improvement in all areas of life with hopes of the greatest chance of long-term recovery.

The traditional approach to therapy can include both individualized and group therapy, a 12-step program, peer support, and cognitive behavioral therapy. A holistic approach can look different and include some of the following:

  • Meditation: Aids in clearing the mind and focusing on the present. This helps to overcome cravings and increase control of the mind to remain calm to avoid triggering or intrusive thoughts.
  • Art therapy: Creative outlets can provide an emotional release and be used to cope with stress or uncomfortable feelings.
  • Massage and acupuncture: They can help to relieve pain and discomfort from detoxification. Can reduce tension and improve relaxation.
  • Exercise: Exercise releases endorphins that boost moods and reduce stress.
  • Nutrition: Incorporating a balanced diet can help the body to heal from the damage done while using.  A balanced diet can also support brain function.
  • Yoga: Yoga can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Yoga also builds strength which can be reduced while using substances. It helps individuals control their breathing and manage cravings.
  • Nature therapy: Outdoor activities can help an individual feel grounded, peaceful, and connected to the natural world.
  • Acupuncture: It can reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms to support long-term recovery.
  • Dance Movement: It can reduce the intensity of cravings and help to release serotonin to promote positive feelings with recovery.

Overall, a holistic approach during detox and addiction recovery can increase the coping skills of an individual and increase feelings of self-esteem and identity. Everyone is unique and requires individualized treatment. By combining components of the holistic approach with traditional treatment methods, an individual can have a recovery journey that is best suited to their unique needs.
